A component of all extant life is that it adapts to survive. You either adapt or you are already adapted. If species did not have this innate nature through their genetic information, then they would have no desire to survive as a species.

Although the life above was reproducing successfully, the economies of scale involving the organisms would indicate that their food source (the organic soup) would not be able to sustain all life. In light of this, organisms currently on Earth would have to diversify to survive for long periods of time.

It is suggested that around three billion years ago, autotrophic animals diverged from previous species. These autotrophs are capable of synthesizing energy from inorganic materials, i.e. through the sun and elements found on Earth. This allowed life on Earth to tap into a new source of energy that was literally inexhaustible – the sun.
